Center for Environmental Health (and Health Promotion?)

The Center for Environmental Health at the University of Connecticut is located on central campus (Koons Hall) within the Department of Allied Health Sciences in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources (CANR). The Center promotes environmental health related teaching, research and public engagement. The major activities of the Center include sponsoring periodic "Connecticut's Environmental Health Concerns" Conferences, maintaining research laboratories, and supporting graduate students whose projects involve environmental health research. Since joining the department of Allied Health Sciences, the mission of the center has expanded to address health promotion activities. As noted in the US Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2010 report, lifestyle choices have significant impacts on chronic diseases. Thus, promoting healthy eating, tobacco avoidance and increased physical activity is of the utmost importance. We share the stated goal of the Healthy People 2010 initiative" . . . to help individuals of all ages increase life expectancy and improve their quality of life."

As of February, 2009, the Center for Environmental Health is engaged in its 5 year review cycle. It is currently propsed to officially change the name of the Center to "The Center for Environmental Health and Health Promotion (CEHHP); as noted above."
